The science is when surfing or swimming for that matter, there is a small air bubble in your ear canal when you put in any kind of earplug, and it has 2 ways to go.
When you dive down either by diving or getting slammed down by a wave deep into the water, you will experience a squeeze pushing the earplug in and that air bubble toward your eardrum or middle Ear.
If you have Eustachian tube issues, then you know what I mean. If you can clear your ears when you down under, you added air into the canal chamber to expand and blow out your earplugs.
