How you get hearing protection that actually fits

Every Big Ear set is molded to the exact shape of your ear, that’s why it seals better and disappears once it’s in. Here’s exactly how it works, from the moment you order to the day your custom set arrives.

The buying process, start to finish

Pick your custom earplugs, earbuds, or adapters and place your order online. If you’re not sure what you need, the fit finder points you to the right set.

STEP 2

Get your ear impressions

Capture the exact shape of your ears, at home with the complimentary kit included in your order, or in person at an audiologist or hearing aid center. Both options are explained below.

STEP 3

We hand-build your set

In our South Carolina lab, molded to your exact ears. Build time is 40 business days (about 7–8 weeks), that hand-built time is exactly why a custom fit outperforms anything off the shelf.

STEP 4

It arrives, guaranteed to fit

Your custom set ships to your door, backed by the Perfect-Fit Promise: if it doesn’t fit right, we remake it.

Three ways to get your ear impressions

An impression is a quick mold of your ear, it’s how we capture your exact shape. Choose whichever is easiest for you. All three end up in the same lab.

OPTION 1

Free home impression kit

No appointment, no travel. We mail you a complete kit with everything you need, illustrated step-by-step instructions, and prepaid return shipping.

When it arrives: open the box, follow the simple directions, and make your impressions right at your kitchen table, about ten minutes. Drop the finished molds in the prepaid mailer and they’re on their way to our lab.

OPTION 2

Visit a Big Ear provider

Big Ear has a network of 50+ providers who take your impressions in person, find one near you for a professional fitting.

Many can even make our on-site solid earplugs the same day; custom filtered sets and earbuds are then hand-built in the lab.

OPTION 3

Audiologist or hearing aid center

Prefer a professional to take your impressions? Any local audiologist or hearing aid center can do it, they take ear impressions routinely.

Ask for full-ear (deep) impressions and have them sent to Big Ear, or bring them to a Big Ear provider. A good choice if you’d rather have it done in person or have unusual ear anatomy.

How long it takes: Once your impressions reach the lab, your set is hand-built in 40 business days, about 7–8 weeks, plus a few days each way for the complimentary kit and return shipping. That wait is the custom fit, and every set is backed by the Perfect-Fit Promise: if it isn’t right, we remake it.

Whatever brought you here, every Big Ear set begins the same way, we take the shape of your ears and build from it. These are the ones most people start with.

The question nobody asks out loud

What if I mess up the impression?

You have never done this before. You are about to put a small foam block in your own ear and fill it with silicone, and somewhere in the back of your mind is the thought: what if I get it wrong and I have just wasted my money?

You haven’t. Tell us, and we send you another kit, free. No argument, no fee, no “you should have watched the video.”

It happens, and it happens to people who did nothing wrong. An impression can come out short, or with a void, or the block can shift. Our lab checks every impression the moment it lands, and if it isn’t good enough to build from, we don’t build from it. We would rather send you a second kit than hand-build a set around a bad mold and let you find out eight weeks later.

You cannot hurt yourself doing this. The oto-block stops the silicone at a safe depth, it physically cannot travel too far into your canal. The silicone is soft, it sets in about five minutes, and the whole impression lifts right back out. It takes 10–15 minutes, it’s easier with a helper, and there is a guided video in the box.

And if you would rather not do it yourself at all, you don’t have to. Get your impressions taken in person at any of our 50+ providers, or at an audiologist or hearing-aid centre. Send those instead.
